The Olmos project in Peru, is a mega project diverting water from the Huancabamba river. The project was a joint venture between the Netafim drip irrigation company which designed and executed the project, Valmont Industries, which supplied the center-pivot irrigation systems, and BERMAD which designed and supplied unique automatic hydraulic solutions for this project.
A 20 km-long canal and tunnels system was built, reaching a reservoir with a volume of 790,000 cubic meters located in the heart of the agricultural area of about 93,000 hectares. 19 sub-zones of 500 hectares each is watered by 97 center-pivot irrigation machines. The total capacity of the project is 34,000 cubic meters per hour – approximately half of Israel’s national carrier!
After a comprehensive analysis, including hydraulic simulations control & hydraulic solutions were specified: control valves regulating pressure and flow, air valves and water meters. In order to provide the system complete protection and reliability, dual pressure-reducing stations were installed on the main lines including double-chamber valves that provide immediate and reliable response. Water meters and control valves were installed at the inlet to each center-pivot irrigation machine that can be remotely controlled according to the different irrigation programs.
The project has been operational with great success since 2015; additional agricultural areas have been networked with piping and hydraulic solutions that guarantee accurate and reliable water supply for irrigation.
