An Environmentally Friendly Fruit Fly Control

Innovative solution with zero fruit fly infestation and zero chemical residues

Most developed countries largely rely on environmentally hostile and poisonous insecticide sprays for pest control in agricultural fields, and more specifically for fruit fly control. These insecticides not only come in direct contact with the fruit and thus pose a threat to end consumers, but also have a negative effect on the environment and are hazardous to workers and to the general public. Consequently, current demand is for a solution with zero fruit fly infestation and zero chemical residues. Biofeed company is focused on delivering cost-effective area-wide-control, using zero spraying, for fruit flies, and specifically to the notorious pests, the Mediterranean fruit fly (Medfly), Ceratitis capitata (Wied.) and the Olive fruit fly, Bactrocera oleae (Rossi).

How does Biofeed device work?
Biofeed’s innovative technology consists of a flat-panel baited device encapsulating a patented chemical formula required to attract, feed, and kill fruit flies. A different formula is produced for each fruit fly species. Using 30 to 150 units per hectare, the devices are suspended from trees at insect flight level, and attract the females before they oviposit in the fruits. The females are attracted to the poisonous bait (containing 0.02% spinosad), alight on the Biofeed surface and feed on it. Once fed the fly is doomed and dies soon after, before oviposition. Thus, not only the insect itself dies but its offspring as well. The Biofeed device acts as a long-term feeding station that lasts up to 8 months. Biofeed’s technology intellectual property is protected by patents.
